SCOPE

The conference will focus on the different interpretations of Orientalism (roughly, the image and stereotypes of the Near and Far East in the Western world) that originated after the publication of Edward Said's seminal work Orientalism and with the opposite version of reading the “Other”: Occidentalism. It will also deal with the cultural production written by Asians and Arabs in the Americas and the Hispanic world in general (including Latin America, the Caribbean, and Spain). Papers from all disciplines are welcome. They can be delivered in English or Spanish, but English is preferred since I will edit a volume in English with thematic chapters that will include extended versions of the papers presented at the conference. It will be published by Cambridge Scholars Press in 2009.
